Elena Mazzi’s exhibition Routes was conceived around a dialogue with three works from the permanent collection of the Museo Novecento in Florence – Mario Sironi’s Il veliero (1929-31), Renato Guttuso’s Contadini in strada/Uomo davanti alla stufa (c.1938) and Enrico Prampolini’s Vita Bioplastica (1938).  The exhibition is structured as an imaginary journey that begins in Sicily, crosses Italy, and takes us to Iceland and then to China, suggesting different possible trajectories.

The aim of this volume is to explore the creative process behind developing the exhibition as well as the artist’s poetics, which focus on the relationship between the human being and the environment in which she/he lives and the strategies in place to tackle the social and ecological emergencies of our time.
